Kiriki Liszt releases JS Inflator, a freeware Sonnox Inflator clone in VST plugin format for Windows.
Sonnox’s Inflator is one of those storied plugins that’s probably a bit simpler under the hood than it seems.
Attempts to clone the sound of Inflator have been present for quite some time, with a notable one being a preset developed for MeldaProduction’s MWaveshaper, as shown in the video below.
JS Inflator is done in a similar vein but was developed for the express purpose of replicating the functionality of Sonnox’s Inflator. JS Inflator has an uncluttered interface, with a handful of controls present on the interface. The interface is easy to read, with a pair of meters denoting the input and output gain.
Bypass cuts the processing; it’s a typical bypass. Clip introduces soft clipping and prevents overages. If you’ve typically run Inflator before your mastering limiter, it functions identically here.
Curve manipulates the distortion curve of the waveshaper, with higher values representing more distortion or saturation applied to the incoming audio. Effect is a bit more nebulous control-wise, but it seems to serve as a blend knob when applying the waveshaping to your audio material.
So, how does it sound? I’ve been a long-time owner of the Oxford Inflator, and it stacks favorably. The original Inflator is perhaps more efficient on the CPU, but the differences between the two are negligible.
One area where the JS Inflator doesn’t quite stack up is in the multiband processing of the original. Wideband processing is the order of the day here, which is fine. If you’ve been on the fence about purchasing Inflator, this is a quick and effective alternative that costs nothing.
JS Inflator is a capable waveshaper, and it sounds great on most materials. The lack of oversampling isn’t a massive deal, as the original Inflator also lacks it.
For more coloration tools, check out our free BPB Saturator and BPB Dirty LA plugins.
JS Inflator is freeware and is found readily on this GitHub page. It is a Windows-only plugin and requires a 64-bit host. Supported plugin formats are VST and VST3, but you’ll need some development know-how to compile for VST2.

Steven Atkinson released Neural Amp Modeler, a free amp profiler based on the Neural network emulator for guitar amplifiers, available in VST3 and AU plugin formats.
Guitarists have been eating well in recent years with the advances in tech from audio plugin developers. Amp plugins like TONEX, NeuralDSP’s entire line, and Metallurgy have been personal favorites.
How would you react if I told you that you could have something akin to TONEX or the Kemper amp profilers for the low, low cost of nothing? Probably pretty stoked, right?
Well, dear reader, prepare yourself to be stoked.
Neural Amp Modeler is a freeware amp profiler developed by Steve Atkinson and has been making quite a splash. Users can profile their own amps, stomp boxes, and any other gear they might see fit. You can also download a plethora of these profiles and models for your own productions.
At its core, it works similarly to the Kemper, Quad Cortex, and any other modeler using amp profiles compared to algorithmic processing. You get the benefit of superb response, which is often lacking in amp sims.
The community around NAM has built an impressive collection of models, which can be found in this handy repository on GitHub.
There very well could be some paid packs in the future, but in the meantime, you have options like the Peavey 5150, a smattering of ENGL amps, and a bunch of stuff you typically don’t see in most amp suites like Sovtek or Ceriatone.
NAM’s sound quality is absolutely killer, and the latest version brought a much-needed noise gate. There are some occasional issues with the included IR loader, but something like NadIR from STL Tones more than suffices.
System requirements for NAM are fairly light. You’ll need to run your host at 44.1 or 48KHz, and it needs to be a 64-bit host.
Supported operating systems are VST3 and AU, with potential support for VST and AAX coming in the future. There is no explicit mention of an Apple Silicon native version, so you’ll definitely have to try it yourself.

NIH-plug is a FREE plugin framework, and you can currently download eight FREE VST plugins to try it out, including a free Disperser emulation.
JUCE has long dominated the audio DSP development realm. Having a readily available framework for development is a fantastic resource for those venturing into making their own plugins. Competition is always good, and NIH-plug brings an open-source framework for developing plugins in RUST.
NIH-plug is platform agnostic and comes with a handful of plugins for producers to use without touching a line of code.
Buffr Glitch is a MIDI-triggered buffer repeater and brings that wonderfully digital glitching sound to your audio. It is a rather clever implementation as well, using the duration of a note to act as a trigger for generating the duration of the glitch effect.
Crisp adds some top end to your basses and is great for bringing out some presence and body to your low-end instruments.
Crossover splits your audio into two to five bands. This is a super basic implementation but does have linear crossover filters. You can essentially process any audio you want as separate outputs, mangling however you wish.
Diopser is a phase rotation plugin inspired by Kilohearts Disperser. It sounds great on kicks or bass. I wouldn’t run this on both at the same time, though.
Loudness War Winner is a “loudener” for lack of a better term. Supremely glad that I have my tracks in Reaper dimmed to -8dB by default before assaulting my eardrums with the sheer volume this pumps out.
Puberty Simulator is an amusing plugin that acts as a pitch shifter that lowers your signal by an octave. It occasionally crackles or goes out of tune. The developer claims this is a joke, but it very well could have some utility in production.
Safety Limiter is the perfect companion to Loudness War Winner. When you have an overage, your DAW signals out an SOS in morse code. Your monitors or headphones get to call for help in a readily recognized international format.
The Spectral Compressor is the real star of the show here and can absolutely smash material. If OTT’s three bands aren’t enough for you, then take full advantage of the FFT bands present in this one.
These plugins are available for all major operating systems, with Windows, Linux, and Mac support. You will need a 64-bit host, and supported plugin formats are VST3 and CLAP. For nightly builds, you can snag them all in one convenient bundle linked below.
